The LA-based teens bring musical diversity into vintage poppy punk.
Don't let their youthful appearance fool you — the ladies and gentleman of the Regrettes can bring down the house as well as any band twice their age. Fresh off the release of some new singles like "Hey Now" and "A Living Human Girl," the Los Angeles teens have been garnering a lot of attention, and rightfully so; their distinct poppy retro punk vibes sound like a much beloved, worn out cassette tape, combining lively rhythms and down-to-earth verses that are refreshing and relatable at any age.
Myspace caught up with Lydia, Genessa, Maxx and Sage at the start of their nationwide tour to talk about their diverse inspirations, guilty pleasures, and finding time to be be a kid.
Lydia Night
Age: 15
Instrument: Guitar and vocals
Song or Band That Inspired You to Become a Musician: I’m influenced by a lot of '50s rock 'n' roll and '60s girl groups. The Crystals, Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline and that genre as a whole — Bleached, Bikini Kill, L7, Babes in Toyland and that whole movement are a few of the bands who have influenced that spectrum of our music.
Favorite Song to Play Live: We just started playing this song called “What a Bitch” and it’s been so fun. I can just yell at people.
(Morando: It’s really high energy.
Gariano: It feels like you’re punching everyone in the face!
Chavis: But at the same time they love it!)
Best Performance You’ve Ever Seen: This is a hands-down no-brainer. I saw The Rolling Stones at the Staples Center. It was insane obviously. Kate Nash is one of my favorite musicians to see live — she’s amazing. Fleetwood Mac was incredible too because they sound identical to their records, even though they’re much older now. It’s a very emotional experience.
Hobbies: Hang out with each other. I’m big on sleeping and hanging out with my friends. When we’re not on tour and not super busy, it’s nice to spend time with people here. I just like being a kid!
Guilty Pleasure: Destiny’s Child and the Jonas Brothers. Sweets — I eat a lot of crap, but I balance it out really well since I eat healthy most of the time. I deserve it!
Genessa Gariano
Age: 19
Instrument: Guitar and background vocals
Song or Band That Inspired You to Become a Musician: I think a lot of my influences are similiar to what Lydia said. Neil Young, David Bowie and a lot of classics.
Favorite Song to Play Live: I love playing our song “Hot” because it’s fast and it’s our closing song, so we give it everything we have, every last bit of energy.
Best Performance You’ve Ever Seen: The band Tacocat, they’re so fun to watch live. Since we’ve been seeing them on this tour, they’re definitely my favorite.
Hobbies: When we’re not on tour, I do like to get out but I’m kind of a homebody. I like to read, draw, paint — do things alone a lot. But if I’m not alone, I’m rehearsing with them and hanging out with everyone else.
Guilty Pleasure: Cheese — on tour we end up eating a lot of cheesey food. Writing scathing Yelp reviews is another, like the shove the knife in the belly and turn it kind. But only when people deserve it.
Maxx Morando
Age: 17
Instrument: Drums
Song or Band That Inspired You to Become a Musician: I pretty much agree with everyone else, but I really like Foals — they’re probably my favorite band.
Favorite Song to Play Live: "Hot" is also my favorite, particularly in the beginning because I get to scream “1, 2, 3, 4” and it’s just a really fun song to play on drums.
Best Performance You’ve Ever Seen: One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to is — very surprising — Foals. It was so cool.
Hobbies: I like hanging out with friends and I just recently picked up skateboarding again and I’m trying to get back into it. Tony Hawk was my biggest inspiration.
Guilty Pleasure: I really like Katy Perry — I get a lot of slack for that but hey — you love what you love.
Sage Chavis
Age: 18
Instrument: Bass and vocals
Song or Band That Inspired You to Become a Musician: My two main influences are Freddie Mercury and Stevie Nicks. I think we’ve influenced each other as a band because we do all like very different kinds of music, but at the same time we appreciate the same things.
(Gariano: We have different degrees of love.)
Chavis: In turn that creates this sort of crazy sound because we mix all of our various loves together.
Favorite Song to Play Live: My favorite’s always going to be “How it Should Be.” It was the first song that we learned and played together. I love it because it starts out slow and tricks everyone — all of a sudden it becomes this cool, feminist pop-punk song and it’s really awesome.
Best Performance You’ve Ever Seen: Ty Segall is so cool to watch. He puts on such a crazy performance where’s he’s this psycho baby, but you meet the band after and they’re all such normal people. On stage, it’s a performance and they’re entertaining people.
Hobbies: Like them, I like to hang out with our friends and spend quality time with the people that we love. I do enjoy a lot of photography, and I’m trying to get back into taking portraits of people. I love being with my dogs, and watching Netflix and YouTube and being on the internet like a millennial should.
Guilty Pleasure: I got yelled at and kicked out of a Rite-Aid for swatching a bunch of unopened lipsticks on my hand. I guess makeup in general is my guilty pleasure, but I don’t feel guilty — I fucking love makeup. It’s art on your face. I love rap music as well. I don’t just listen to it, I put it on and really enjoy it.
