The star of ‘Dead of Summer’ and ‘Gotham’ talks supernatural and superpowers.
For a young actress, Paulina Singer certainly has a wildly impressive resume. She’s starred on Gotham; had a cameo on Orange is the New Black; plays one of the leads on Dead of Summer and starred alongside Robert De Niro on The Intern. Next year we’ll see her in an all-star comedy Wilde Wedding, but for now let’s get to know the girl behind the curls.
She’s Got a Russian Name
“My mom’s side of the family is Eastern European,” Singer explains over a phone call, trying to break through the loud sirens. That’s what her typical day on set looks like apparently.
She Likes Telling Other People's Stories
“People in the spotlight used to be generically one way, so I wanted to come out and show people that your voice is powerful no matter what category it falls into," she says. "When I was younger I just wanted to show me, but when I started taking acting classes I realized it was about other people and about the world and not about me at all. And I was more of a conduit of power and the lives that people have. These are the people who either can't or don't want to voice it themselves. There are writers who write about these people, and I’m the person who helps bringing it all to life.”
She’s Starring In ‘Dead of Summer’
Freeform is making sure our summer is far from relaxed with their latest supernatural teen horror series Dead of Summer. Singer plays resident bad girl Jessie with a nerdy past and a bunch of other secrets that will intertwine with the rest of the suspicious activity that’s going down on the cursed camp. “My character is guarded and complex. She’s got a very hard shell. People see her as a bitch because she never really had a childhood having to take care of her mom. Eventually she took her mom’s advice and decided to use her looks to get whatever she wanted and never show her true feelings.”
She Likes to Play a Complex Character
“Jessie is hardly a bad girl. She’s just got this façade because her true emotions didn’t get her where she wanted them to," Singer explains. "I’ve played one-dimensional characters before, not on TV though, it was fun, too, to just play around. But I like that there's something I can show and trying to figure out how to portray these hidden emotions.”
She Believes in the Supernatural
When asked if she herself believes in the supernatural, she gives a cryptic “Yeah,” so we have to interrogate her a little. Did anything weird ever happen to her? “The word supernatural means ‘super-real,’ which is our reality right now. For me it means what’s really going on underneath the surface. And in that sense, aside from ghosts and demons, it’s energy and energy can be perceived as long as you’re looking for it. So I think that supernatural is happening all the time.”
She’s Making Music, Too
When she’s not filming a scene, she’s usually making music on set. But does she plan to share this music with the world at some point? “Yeah, I just haven’t found the right outlet yet. I haven’t made enough songs.”
She May Return to ‘Gotham’
If Singer’s face looks familiar to you, it’s probably because she’s just finished her arc on FOX’s Gotham, playing Josie Mac from the Michael Chiklis’ task force. Was it the last we’ve seen of Josie? As for many of the Gotham City inhabitants, the future is uncertain. “It’s possible that I’d be back. They didn’t kill me.”
Considering the show deals with superpowers, did she ever think about what powers she’d like to possess? “I would like the power to be able to make people see things from every perspective. I could go to a factory farm and make the workers feel all the pain that the animals are feeling.”
She’s Spent a Minute Behind Bars
You may have also seen a glimpse of her on the recent season of Orange Is The New Black. “I didn’t really feel like it was that crazy ‘cause I was only in the show for a minute. I like the show a lot and it’s cool that I’m associated with it now. But it was such a small role that it was more of an exercise, a learning experience.” Would she return? “I’d love to!”
She’s Been Invited to a Celebrity Wedding
Singer’s next big project is an ensemble comedy Wilde Wedding, where she’s starring opposite the likes of John Malkovich, Glenn Close, Patrick Stewart and Minnie Driver. The movie will come out sometime in 2017, but we got Singer to reveal a little bit about the plot and her role.
“The story is very fun: it’s about a wedding that goes wrong. My character is very eccentric, she’s a comic relief. But also a lot of the characters come from wealthy, well-endowed families. And she is happier than most of them while having less than them. She’s not following the norms that everyone else seems to follow.”
She Is Not a Party Girl
Her character on Dead of Summer may be a good person to start a camp party, but Paulina says she’s not a party girl… anymore. “When I was very young and when partying was very new to me, at 16-17, I was more excited about being surrounded by people and thought that if I didn’t go out I was missing out. But as I got older I realized that what you’re missing out on is determined by what’s inside of you. I do go out with friends, ‘cause that way I know we’ll all have the same perspective on everything, but I never go out to just go out.”
She Likes Snapchat
“I don’t like social media," she divulges. "It’s fun when you view it like a game though. It’s cool that you can just see what’s happening on your little device. I think it would be more interesting if people could see something deeper. So I actually like Snapchat, because you can make stories and art. Snapchat is more alive.” So if you want to follow Paulina’s story of conquering Hollywood, follow her at @zuzusilk.
