In the decades of its existence, Comic-Con has been a haven to the nerds and geeks of the world. While the kind of people attending hasn’t changed, society has gone from shunning them to having them influence all aspects of our culture. This weekend nerds, geeks and “normies" alike swarmed the San Diego Convention Center for another four days of cultural indulgence.

There were so many incredible sights, sounds and experiences that could be seen this year. Jaw dropping feats of art from Weta Workshop and their work with Warcraft models, Marvel and DC with previews of things to come for their television and film franchises and all of the entertainment that the Gaslamp District has to offer: bars, clubs and parties.

One of most surreal displays at this year’s event was The Walking Dead set, with its realistic models portraying the final scene from Season 6. With walkers shambling around the booth and people waiting hours in line to take photos with the replica of the doomed group, it felt like a psychological evaluation based on how your reaction to it was.

Beyond that self-imposed psychological mind-fuck, everything under the sun was represented at this year’s Comic-Con. But few things pushed harder into our souls this weekend than nostalgia.

Nickelodeon brought the pain by revitalizing so many things from our youth, including the announcement of the new Legends of the Hidden Temple and Hey Arnold! movies.

Nostalgia also strung us along this weekend, not so much at what was presented at Comic-Con, but rather what we did while hopping from panel to panel to exhibit hall: play Pokemon Go.

All of downtown San Diego was lit up with lure-activated Pokestops and pub crawls. There was even mention of hopping on a bus specifically driving around at Pokemon Egg hatching speed, as it hit the city Pokestops all day.

In fact, Pokemon had priority over so many people that hundreds congregated outside Hall H due to a rumor of a legendary Pokemon’s release on Sunday Afternoon.

But the real spectacle was and always will be cosplay. There are very few conventions that cosplayers will make cross-country trips to be at, and this year the cosplay was STRONG. From Jessica Rabbit to a Rocky/Drago fight, every genre was covered, and it was covered well.

Overall Comic-Con was a win. So many new friends were made and so many new experiences were achieved. With the popularity of geek culture, it’s only a matter of time before Comic-Con becomes a weeklong event.
