The R&B singer noshes on sandwiches and chats about becoming a woman in the industry.

Considering she’s been performing since grade school, it’s safe to say that Tiffany Evans is a music biz veteran. Breaking into the industry with powerful performances on Showtime at the Apollo and Star Search, she went on to release 2008’s Tiffany Evans via Columbia Records as well as two EPs -- 2013’s 143 and All Me in 2015 on her own label Little Lady Entertainment. MySpace had the chance to get to know Tiffany a little better when she was in New York City in March. She may have had a packed schedule in New York City, but she still gotta eat. And after spending mere minutes with her, we learned that Tiffany may be as fit as can be, but she also loves a good meal. “I love food,” she expressed as we sat down at Cafeteria, a 24-hour diner in Chelsea. “I can’t help it.”

She also added, “In Atlanta, they don’t have many 24-hour spots, except the fast food. And sometimes you just want something really good and that’s close to home cooking.”

After hearing about the specials, we opted for grilled salmon BLTs, which we later realized were double the size that we expected to get, and chatted about the making of the video for “On Sight.” Although she is currently based in Atlanta, Tiffany’s roots stem from the Big Apple. So getting to come to the city and the video for her single, “On Sight,” was a special homecoming moment for her. “To be honest, I don’t think I’ve shot a video in New York ever,” she admitted as she took another sip of a drink called “The Simple Life,” made with included grapes, rosemary, lime and tonic water. “So this one is really special because I’m from here.”

She continued, “For this song and this video in particular, I wanted to stay to the essence of New York and its roots. I’m from New York so it’s important to catch the scenery, catch essence and really get to showcase where I’m from.”

While the one-day shoot was an overall success, Tiffany admitted that the weather wasn’t necessarily on her side.

“It was daytime when we went over there,” she said. “And the weather changed so quickly. I was really afraid that it was going to rain, and it did. I was so scared because there were $15,000 lights out there, and we just packed up immediately and saw what happened with the rain. We waited an hour. It actually did stop raining, but it’s freezing.”

Fetty Wap lent his vocals to the “On Sight;” And while Tiffany wouldn’t say if he’s appearing in the video or not, she did say that her friend, who went to school with him, connected the singer with his team. “They got the song and loved it,” she said. “They sent it to him. He heard it and loved it. Then [he] went into the studio that night and record [the verse]. And he killed it. It was one of the easiest collaborations I’ve worked on.”

If you’ve heard her current EP, All Me, it’s clear that Tiffany is no longer the little girl that wowed everyone with her big voice. Now at 23, she’s married with two daughters and has really grown up, which she makes sure to highlight on her latest work.

“I just want them to see the growth,” she said. “Sometimes when people grow up, they force it on you. But for me, when I took some time away, I was still building my fan base. I still had a strong line of communication with them. I told them what I was doing and where I was at in my life. I was releasing music here and there, but nothing solid. So when I started working on All Me, I wanted to make a stamp. From my look, the songs I write, the video I make, I wanted to showcase 100 percent. I’d say experience helped me transition into a woman very fluidly. I don’t have to horse it on you. I just know what I’ve been through, and I’m able to speak about them in my songs. I want them to see and hear the growth and know it comes from a real place.”

While working on All Me, Tiffany explained that she wasn’t only recording but was also making sure her toddler was okay as well as carrying her second child. But even though she didn’t necessarily have the easiest time being pregnant and in the studio, Tiffany didn’t let that stop her from achieving her goals. And she hopes she can lead by example and show other moms out there that having a family necessarily stop you from everything else you want to do.

“I want to inspire women to understand that and go do it,” she said. “You may be a mom of two or three, but you have dreams that you want to pursue. Most of the time, people will say that having kids will slow you down or make you set things away for a while. But I’m living proof that it happens. You just to be willing to work hard and know that it’s not easy.”

As we slowly gave up on our massive lunch and request them to be packed up, Tiffany left us with some sage advice that she wish she knew when she was growing up in the music business.

“Watch and pay attention and learn,” she revealed. “Don’t be so quick to speak and observe. Not every situation requires you to speak or make your points. Learn so you can get a sense of who people are and who you’re dealing with.”

She also added that people should rush the process. “And don’t be so hard on yourself about not fitting in or being all the way put together,” Tiffany said. “If you develop your craft and your art and the fans will like it, they will come. It will take time. Just enjoy the journey.”
