Norwegian DJ/producer goes out for Korean food, comes back with hit tune, out today.
Norwegian producer Fehrplay’s DJ name sounds a tad bit obvious (his real name, after all, is Jonas Fehr), but his music is anything but. His sound, which he describes as “melodic and melancholy,” has a range that’s hard to categorize. It ranges from progressive house to techno, and a little bit of trance introduced by barely there vocal samples. All of this is evident in his newest release, "Dokebi," out today (June 20) on Armada Music’s label Trice, an offshoot of Armada Music thats releases bridge club techno and radio-friendly hits.
It’s also what people will be hearing more of from Fehrplay’s label, Mood of Mind, which he’s starting this summer. He talks to Myspace about his favorite gigs around the world, how he fell in love with EDM at the age of 12 and what he does for fun.
Hometown and homebase: Oslo, Norway
What is your latest single, “Dokebi,” about?
Dokebi is a Korean restaurant in Brooklyn where a friend of mine works. I spent a lot of time there last year working on tunes (and made most of “Dokebi” there) and drinking moscow mules. Only fair I called a tune “Dokebi.”
Talk about your first EDM or rave experience.
It was the Definitely Warehouse Project in Manchester. I had just moved there to study when I was 21, and although I had been to Sensation White (among other events), I hadn't really experienced a proper rave until I went to Manchester. Completely changed [me and] blew me away.
When did you realize you wanted to DJ?
When I was around 12 years old I think. Really got in to trance, and was digging Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, etc. Always cared more for the production side of it though, but I guess you got to start somewhere.
So you like better producing better than DJing?
I think producing will always be number one. It’s where I started out, and I can always open my laptop and start a new beat. Nothing beats the rush you can get from the crowd though.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with Røyksopp, they’ve been a huge influence for many years. Actually got to remix them last year, and it’s the most fun I’ve ever had remixing a track.
Give us a few music recommendations—what are you listening to now?
At the moment I love Alan Fitzpatrick. He just seems to get better and better. Also jigging to Solomun a lot lately. He's got some great mixes out.
What's your favorite—and least favorite—city in the world to play in?
I have to put New York on top together with Tokyo. New York has a great club scene now a days. And Tokyo is just amazing. Wicked clubs and really engaging crowd.
Least favorite is tricky, since I can't really remember any specific time that’s been bad. Obviously I’ve had bad gigs, but majority has been great the second time. I think a few dates in rural Canada could be considered a bit interesting. Still had fun though!
What do you do for fun?
I'm kind of boring, I guess [laughs]. I just like to play with my dog, drink beer and watch South Park most of the time.
If you were a hashtag, what would you be?

Do you have a Myspace-related story to tell as a musician?
Yes! I signed my first record through Myspace, when I lived in Manchester! Thanks Myspace.
