Detroit metalcore band shows off inspirational songwriting skills in new album 'Believe.'
Detroit metalcore band A War Within, made up of Spencer Mabey (vocals/bass), Armando Castaño (bass/vocals), Nikhil Rao (guitars), Jereme Stebila (guitars) and Angelo Walker (drums), came together in 2014. A palpable onstage chemistry spurred their debut single, “Holding On,” but it took a few live tours and a couple more releases until the band really gelled together. Having toured with Miss May I and Blessthefall, A War Within has honed its live shows into a confident, tight set. The level up is evident in their latest full-length, Believe.
Today we're excited to premiere A War Within's video for “Slave.” In it, the band performs in three different sets: the frozen tundra, blustery fall and the hot summer in the ocean.
“‘Slave’ is our blue collar anthem," Mabey reveals. "Its literal interpretation is on how dedicated we are to everyone who supports us. The song is our way of saying we’re passionate, obsessive and determined to continue to do what we do until we die.” He adds that it’s an oath; “a simple reminder to stick by our word and give others a bit of hope that they too can break free from whatever is trapping them, whether it be addiction, lack of confidence, fear, failure, doubt or any maladies or any type of hindrances that anyone can experience. They too can push through the hard times to become what they want to become.”
Shot in three different seasons in three different locations, the band filmed and edited the whole video themselves over the course of several months. The summertime shots were set in Panama City, FL; the fall shots in Northville, MI; and the winter shots in Roscommon, MI. All that, too, is symbolic.
“It was a very tough ordeal to fight the heat and the water as well as the frigid cold. The video represents the push forward through the difficult times that can occur whenever and can be in any shape or form," Mabey says. "The end result we wish for is unknown to us as we push forward; but the search, the journey is what we wish to continually find.”
