Following the footsteps of Hanson, this trio is about to pop to the top with a new EP.
Sick and tired all of the manufactured boybands out there? Well fear no more—there’s a new brotherly boyband in town with enough catchy bops to give Hanson a run for their money. Meet Riley, Connor and Toby McDonough, aka Before You Exit, who write and produce their own (deviously catchy!) tunes, play guitar, rock some seriously stylish looks and already have a devoted fanbase.
Despite the name, they’re nowhere near the Exit sign. If anything, they’re about to properly arrive to the pop world with the release of their new EP All The Lights (out April 8 on RCA Records) that follows 2014’s I Like That debut release. We chatted with Riley about the new set of songs, being in a band with his brothers and what model he'd like to serenade with their single, "Model."
How are you, where are you and what are you up to right now?
Doing really great, man! Right now we’re in Orlando, just at home. Gearing up for this EP release. We’re super excited!
What’s the story of the trio? When did you decide to turn brotherhood into a boybandhood?
We’ve always been into performing. It started off when we were very young. We’ve started doing community theater and then turned to music. Connor was the first one who started playing guitar. It definitely runs in the family. Once we started performing together, we never stopped.
How did you pick that name? What other options did you have?
We all really wanted to come up with a name that would be inspirational and has a special meaning to it as opposed to something random. Before You Exit means "make a difference before you exit." But there were a lot of other bad names we came up with, trust me. I can’t really remember any of them. But there definitely were some bad ones!
Tell me about the new EP, All The Lights.
It’s been in the making for the last few years. Stories from our lives that we’ve been writing about for all this time. We wrote everything and Connor produced it, so it’s been a little bit longer than we’ve expected. It’s been a lot of fun to make though.
You can sing, play guitar and beatbox; what other talents do you guys possess?
We’re always very active, especially when we’re on tour. Whenever we see a field, we’ll play, we work out, stay healthy. But music’s definitely our main passion.
How does your writing and recording process look like?
It’s always different. We never really know where the song is gonna come from. Sometimes it will be just us on the airplane, we’ll think of a concept or a melody. And then once we’re in a studio we’d bring this idea up. Other times it will be just us sitting in our bedroom, just playing the guitar.
You have a single called “Model.” What famous model would you like to sing it to?
Oh man… If I have to pick one model, I’d go with Miranda Kerr.
All three of you are very stylish. How big is your collective wardrobe?
It’s really just us. We’re not too picky. We wear a lot of dark colors and go along with whatever we’re feeling that day.
How much time do you take to get ready though: to get the right look, the right hair, etc, etc?
A lot shorter than you’d expect. Shower and getting dressed is all about 20 minutes.
I bet your tour manager is pretty happy about this!
Oh yeah.
You’ve supported Fifth Harmony, Olly Murs and Cody Simpson. Did any of them give you any good advices?
Every tour can be very educational. You see how the other acts perform, pick up little tips on the road and then utilize it for your own tour.
If you could spend a day with any other boyband, who would you pick?
I would say Backstreet Boys. We’d have an 8-part harmony.
I’m sure they’d be up for this. Give them a call!
Yeah, we’ll reach out [laughs].
What’s the best and the worst thing about touring?
The best thing is getting to go to all of these different places and getting to be with your best friends. The hardest part is when you’re away from home for so long. When your family is with you, you do feel like you’re traveling with your home though. But sometimes you miss sleeping in your own bed.
You have quite a following. What’s your craziest fan story so far?
I think the craziest experience was going to Manila for the first time. We’ve had no idea that we were even known in another country. To get such a cool reaction outside of the States was the best experience.
What apps do you use the most?
Probably Twitter or YouTube. Actually probably YouTube, because we watch a lot of videos on there when we have downtime.
Do you watch your own interviews?
Sometimes.
What are you most excited about this year?
I’m more excited to see everybody else’s reaction to the new songs and see which ones people will like. And also to get back to studio right away: we have a lot of new songs on the way!
