The German-born singer tells us the story behind the visual and her new LP, 'Let's Play.'

From the moment she was rocking the moonwalk as a toddler to her years studying music at New York University, Saniyé was made for the stage. We first got to know this Big Apple artist when she dropped When I Don't Sleep... Years after that release, she's back with her sophomore effort, Let's Play, and is premiering her saucy new video for the single, "Man Outta Me," right here on MySpace. Get to know Saniyé below and watch the video above.

Homebase: New York City, NY

What is "Man Outta You" about?

"Man Outta You'” is about a woman playing with the idea of getting close with a stranger the very night she meets him. She craves the game. The song has that mysterious "modern TV drama" storyline: there is something mystical about this that is enticing to someone who is playing with love as well as luck of the moment. I'm sure that describes someone's mother, somewhere?

What is the premise behind the video for "Man Outta You"?

The music video was directed by the talented Drew Wilson at Smash Studios, in New York City. We wanted to have a smoky, seductive vibe, just like the song. The woman in the video is a sultry, mischievous and mysterious character. She's the dealer, the heartbreaker, the teacher, the lover, the risk-taker, the rule breaker, the tease, the gambler...all at once. Boy, I really had a fun time playing all those characters. It was my idea to draw inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, and that's exactly what I did when I played the dealer.

This is your sophomore album. What can we expect from your album, Let's Play?

When it came time to write new music for this album, I wanted to go in an indie pop direction but still keep the songs quirky and unique. I'd like to think of myself as a chameleon when it comes to music because as a songwriter, first and foremost, I like to write in different styles. As a music fan and listener, the same applies. My first CD collection consisted of everything from Wu-Tang Clan and Rage Against The Machine to African music to opera to Mariah Carey. I was all over the place with my tastes. It still cracks me up. For that reason, making albums is actually difficult for me. It's not easy to maintain consistency in the songs, especially if the album is written/recorded over time, the way Let's Play was (three years). Luckily I had an amazing producer; Mikal Blue.

What started out as just a song or two when we first met became sketches for an EP, and from there turned into a full-fledged album, which we’re finally releasing and super proud of. On Let's Play, all the songs are different from each other, the way I like it, but are also woven in a cohesive tapestry, thanks to the production magic of Mikal. Thematically, I kept the songs playful in one form or another. “Playful” in the album means many things, depending on which song you're listening to. "Love Me x3," "Rhyme and Reason" are playful in a child-like sense. "Dr. Kiss Me," "Forever and Ever," "Man Outta You" are playful in a flirtatious sense. "Love Is A Recipe," "You (Can't) Won't Make Me C*me," "Lazy Lover" are cheeky and sexually playful. "Bitter and Better Off Dead" are about players, in a romantic sense, and about playing the game of love. Favorite Song is just playful in a fun, party way. Finally, "Pinball and Video Games" is an homage to playing at an arcade with a friend. It's about a shared love of games, and never growing up. It's really important to me that this album is as fun to listen to as it was for me to make. I want everyone to have a great time.

What's next for you?

Well, Let's Play is coming out June 24, which my team and I are super excited about! It's been a long time coming. Before the release, we're planning some fantastic events in and around New York City to promote the album. We just did one actually on International Pillow Fight Day. We gave out free Let's Play T-shirts promoting my upcoming new album to fellow pillow-fighters with the hashtag #LetsPlayAlbum, and for each T-shirt worn, we donated cash to the Dare2be organization, a charity that supports children of poverty in NYC- the main reason the pillow fight was happening in the first place.

In the fall, I'm planning to go to Malawi with a friend to help build a local playground. But back here at home, we're also planning to be a part of more playful events in the city, including Bubble Day, Light Saber Fight Day, as well as partying it up with listeners at arcades and Modern Pinball NYC, play shows, make more music videos, jump on some bouncy bounces, and make super fun stuff for social media and the Pledge Music Let's Play pre-sale campaign, which will go live soon.
