She says the media forced her to make her transition public before she was ready.

The second Wachowski sibling, of the directors behind The Matrix series, has come out as a trans woman. Andy Wachowski, who now goes by Lilly, made her transition public in a statement to The Windy City Times. Lilly's sister Lana had also come out a trans woman in 2012, though only after a years-long transition that she tried to keep private.

Unfortunately, the breaking point for Lilly was when a Daily Mail reporter came to her house, despite her and Lana largely avoiding the press, asking her to make her story public. This frustrated Lilly, because she suddenly felt forced to make her transition public. "I just wanted—needed some time to get my head right, to feel comfortable," she says. "But apparently I don't get to decide this."

Shortly after The Windy City Times published Lilly's statement, GLAAD responded to the news. "GLAAD is thrilled that Lilly Wachowski is able to be her true and authentic self today," says Nick Adams, director of programs for transgender media, "however, she should not have been forced to disclose her transgender identity before she was ready to do so."

The Daily Mail denies forcing Lilly to come out. "As Ms. Wachowski says herself, we were not the first media group which approached her and we made absolutely clear at several points in the conversation that we were only interested in doing the story with her cooperation and had no intention of publishing anything without her consent," a statement says. "Our reporter was extremely sympathetic and courteous at all times."
