This week, we learn Donald Trump's origin story and get pumped up for 'Ghostbusters.'
Welcome back to another edition of This Week in Streaming, the cord-cutters guide to the week that was—without a cable subscription. This week, we're applauding John Oliver's take down of Donald Drumpf, barely mentioning the Oscars, marveling at an elaborate and unnecessary musical instrument and waiting for a reboot that better be good.
Make Donald Drumpf Again
Recommended dosage: The largest, most luxurious discontinued Drumpf steak from the Sharper Image
As soon as it first aired, This Week Tonight with John Oliver took over for the long held position by Jon Stewart of The Daily Show as the go-to common sense filter of the 24 hour news cycle. Jon Stewart always seemed to be in pain and as you watched his how every night you felt it too. The pain was real and we all held onto it. This made the laughs cathartic. You were helping each other get through the tough times. I love Trevor Noah and hope he has a great career, but he seems too happy with his life to be able to deliver me horrible news and facts about our world and then make me laugh about it with him. He just seems like he'll be okay either way.
John Oliver's show airs once a week like a super concentrated version of all of the best parts of The Daily Show's decade and a half run. The switch to a weekly program allows for a lot more polish and easier appointment television. This past week Oliver and his team finally hit their first iconic episode.
The #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain meme has been splashed all over every pixel throughout my social media. Every sane human in this country (and probably around the world) has been watching The Donald's meteoric rise to the top of the Republican party with a blend of terror and glee. We all knew someone would take him down before we really had to worry, but paranoia grew as the months rolled by and nobody could land a punch. I'm not saying this is going to kill Drumpf's campaign, but it finally exposed how we should be reacting to it and talking about it.
It's the same phenomenon of how impressions become widespread—Will Farrell was George W. Bush and whenever you heard someone doing an impression, it wasn't an impression of Dubya, it was someone's version of Ferrell doing Dubya. Either way the joke was the same, George W. Bush was a buffoon. Up to this point, Mr. Drumpf has simply been a cartoon character with bad hair saying a catch phrase:
The dangerous part is that it makes him seem harmless, nothing more than an eccentric business man feeding off of his own trumped up brand. What John Oliver just told us in that episode is that it's okay to make jokes about him being a liar, a fool, a bigot, a failure, a loser, and a real life nuclear disaster waiting to explode. Trump is a brand, the man behind it is a fraud and should be forever remembered as Donald Drumpf.
People are finally starting to jump on board. Just today, world famous Mormon robot, Mitt Romney gave a speech that made me feel all sorts of confused inside...
Did I just agree with Mitt Romney? Wait. Do I like Mitt Romney?
Something's happening, and it's happening fast. Drumpf has been outed as a con man and it's about to get real fun piling on. So feel free to share the episode, buy the hat, link the updated Wikipedia page, or even add a Chrome extension to replace all of your Trumps to Drumpfs. I did it and the satisfaction is HUUUUGE.
The Oscars
Recommended dosage: A sleeve of some girl scout cookies to and a few rounds of Irish coffees to dunk them into
Tina Fey pretty much summed up all of my feelings about the Oscars on The Howard Stern Show in such a way that it makes it possible for me to sort of gloss over it quickly. I thought Chris Rock hit the right tone for the night and my only real disappointment was that when Leo won we didn't get this:
Instead, we got a rather empty outpouring of emotion for a call to action on climate change. If you just rolled your eyes, please go back and click the aforementioned link of Tina on Stern.
The World's Most Inessential Instrument
Recommended dosage: Two hits out of a beautifully handcrafted water bong constructed out of driftwood and artisanal milk jugs
My favorite random thing from the Internet this week is a sort of Rube Goldberg type of wind up instrument, complete with levers and a never ending flow of cascading marbles. The fact that someone conceived of this blows my mind right out of my face...The fact that it was built and then used to perform a genuinely interesting piece of music makes me want to believe in humanity again. I won't but, check this out:
Sick right!? Now if I find out this was a fake I might just end up voting for Donald Drumpf.
Rebooting Ecto Cooler
Recommended dosage: A fifth of vodka mixed with any Internet version of the classic Hi-C drink*
Finally, let's look to the future with hope and anticipation. Paul Feig, the director of Bridesmaids, has just released the first trailer for his upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, and I am on board. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy look hilarious and I'm hoping Kate McKinnon will cross over into the mainstream after spending time as the most consistently funny featured player on Saturday Night Live. Also, I think I get Leslie Jones now. She's funny.
Please god, let this movie be as good as I want it to be.
