Playmates, midgets and sumo wrestlers! Oh my!
The “Showcase of the Immortals” takes place next week as WrestleMania 32 rolls into Dallas, TX. The WWE's “Super Bowl” has a long history of providing iconic matches like Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs. The Rock, and The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels.
As the big day draws near, you’ll see an influx of “The Best of” and “All-Time” lists, as fans debate which matches should or shouldn’t be mentioned. I’m more of the “been there done that” mind set. With an unusually high number of injuries putting a damper on this year’s card, I'm hoping for something on the strange side.
Lost in the long history of WrestleMania, are the bizarre and head scratching matches that took place on wrestling's grandest stage.
Here are 8 outrageous matches that you can't believe actually took place.
NFL VS. WWF 20-Man Battle Royale (WrestleMania 2)
Could you imagine Tom Brady trying to drop-kick Dean Ambrose? There’s NO WAY this match could ever take place today. The money-making machine of the NFL wouldn’t dare jeopardize its players for a gimmick match. Thank goodness for the 1980s!
Only in that decade of decadence could you have active players like William “The Refrigerator” Perry, Bill Fralic and Jimbo Covert brawling it out with the likes of Andre The Giant and The Iron Sheik.
In true form of the Rock ‘n’ Wrestling era, the match was over-the-top, wild and very entertaining.
Hillbilly Jim, Little Beaver & the Haiti Kid VS. King Kong Bundy, Lord Littlebrook & Little Tokyo (WrestleMania 3)
Here’s the winner for the match you might confuse for a XXX movie, with talent like Little Beaver, King Kong Bundy and Lord Littlebrook. This was a mixed-midget tag match where King Kong Bundy played the part of Godzilla, as he squashed and almost ate the midget wrestlers.
You never want to see a Little Beaver get pulverized by a giant ugly man:
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper VS. Bad News Brown (WrestleMania 6)
Back in 1990, the late great “Rowdy” Roddy Piper thought it be a good idea to wrestle a match in Blackface against an African American competitor. Vince McMahon actually gave him the green light and the match took place with half of Piper’s body painted black.
The match and promos leading up to it, are probably the worst moments in Piper’s career. The only thing more offensive would have been for him to show up in a Ku Klux Klan robe with a burning cross.
The Undertaker VS. Giant Gonzalez (WrestleMania 9)
We finally got our question answered of what it would be like if Sasquatch competed in wrestling. At 7ft 7in, Jorge “The Giant” Gonzalez was a freak of nature, better suited for the circus than a wrestling ring. Vince McMahon being Vince McMahon, slapped an airbrushed muscle body-suit (with patches of fur precisely covering his nether regions) on him and paraded him out to the ring as sacrifice to The Undertaker.
The match was a cross between a live-action video game, and a giant monster movie, as all that was missing was a fake tiny city for them to stomp on.
Hollywood Backlot Brawl: “Rowdy” Roddy Piper VS. Goldust (WrestleMania 12)
What a surprise Piper’s back on the list, but this time he’s not the focus. No, that honor goes to his competitor, the controversial and provocative, Goldust. Today, people know Goldust as a comedy sidekick but in 1996, he was cutting-edge and one of the most unique characters to ever come out of professional wrestling.
The bizarre Goldust played the homosexual angle against Piper’s super macho, tough guy persona. Goldust arrived in a gold Cadillac (of course) and got the hell beaten out of him. To the horror of all kids watching, Piper stripped Goldust down to a bra and fishnet stockings, followed up with a kiss. Strange but true!
Playboy Evening Gown Match: Torrie Wilson & Sable VS. Stacy Keibler & Miss Jackie (WrestleMania 20)
Playboy and the WWE is an ideal partnership considering they’re catering to the same demographic. Back during the Attitude Era, it was commonplace to have a WWE Diva turn up on the pages of Playboy. If you like real-life Barbies, this match was tailored made for you.
Nothing more than your basic bra and panties match, you had a ball of chaos consisting of silicone and hair extensions, with fans hoping to see a wardrobe malfunction. The WWE would go back to the Playboy well at WrestleMania 22 with a Playboy Pillow Match that would deliver the same thing: letdown for pervy fans.
Sumo Match: The Big Show VS. Akebono (WrestleMania 21)
The WWE should have paid us all to witness this nightmare. Having to watch Big Show try and stay in his sumo loincloth is traumatizing for anyone to witness. Somebody thought that, well since Big Show is big and hefty why not put him against a grand sumo champion?!!
Talk about lackluster. This match had basically zero buildup and was just a dud having to sit through. Hopefully the WWE learned their lesson that sumo and pro wrestling, don’t mix!
Hair VS Hair Match: Bobby Lashley w/ Donald Trump VS. Umaga w/ Vince McMahon (WrestleMania 23)
Last week I covered how as the special referee for this match, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin stunned Donald Trump. The real buildup, however, was between The Donald and McMahon in what was billed as “The Battle of the Billionaires match” where each eccentric tycoon would select a wrestler to defend their honor. The catch was that the loser would get his head shaved.
The end result was as silly as a Jerry Springer episode, with pushing and shoving as Trump and McMahon exchanged hollow threats. Of course McMahon got his head shaved but the strange part is that looking back, this match is tame considering what’s happening in our current presidential elections.
