It’s hard to say whether Jake Troth has more radio-friendly hooks in his songs or bright floral-printed shirts in his wardrobe. What is pretty obvious, though, is the fact that Jake’s got enough talent to pull off multiple creative projects this year. 2016 sees the singer-songwriter not only releasing a new album, but also premiering a quirky short film, Double Black Diamond, that sees a fictional version of himself falling in love with a female reporter. Last year marked Jake’s debut in the big label world as he premiered “Everybody Loves You” on Atlantic Records. Apart from singing his own songs and looking stellar in his trademark glasses, Jake also writes for artists like Jennifer Lopez, Kevin Gates and was spotted performing with Big Boi’s crew in the past. What’s your story so far?

North Carolinian Art-School-dropout who moved west to live the dream. Baseball enthusiast, guitar solo advocate. Too art for jock, too jock for art.

You’ve once skateboarded to Big Boi’s house to work with him. How was it like working with him?

He's a legend, so his confidence and curiosity is out of this world. It was really fun and educational. He made me a turkey burger and told me I had soul.

Tell me about your short film project Double Black Diamond. What made you decide to write it and where can we see it?

I wanted to make a long-form music video that depicted the sentiments of the album. My friend Stewart Yost and I wrote a love story that takes place in a parallel universe where I am buzzing pop artist. I was always inspired by the music movies I grew up watching, like the Michael Jackson one with evil Joe Pesci, and the film that the Who made. I love blending music and film in a hybrid musical way.

Did you ever have an interview go as horribly as the one in Double Black Diamond’s "Blog Show"?

One time I tried to be super Yeezy confident because I was nervous in New York, and I think I ended up just sounding like an ass.

Your older music video “On My Way” was a fun mini-movie, too. Who came up with that idea?

That was my concept brought to life by the brilliant Austin Saya.

You write for other artists a lot, too. What songs are you most proud of?

I'm really proud of Kevin Gates' "Really Really". That's the biggest tune I've been a part of so far.

A lot of your lyrics are about relationships. How do you keep the inspiration coming? By constantly going on dates?

Sounds and chords remind me of various details about previous relationships so I often dive back into those feelings and try to poeticize them. I don't date a lot currently because I live way out at the beach and spend a lot of my days writing.
