If you like your pop music a little gloomier, this Canadian is for you.
If Nine Inch Nails was fronted by a younger woman instead of Trent Reznor, they would probably sound a lot like NLX.
The "dark pop" music of Canadian singer-songwriter Natasha Alexandra combines a distorted electronic sound with a powerful voice that sounds just a little bit like Bjork singing over a modern take of an old new wave band. It's mesmerizingly haunting and beautiful at the same time, and NLX's talents are all on full display on her latest album, Luxury of Failure.
Although NLX has been around for over a decade and has had her music featured on TV and in movies, she still believes in doing almost everything herself and her own way. Rather than cash out as another pop starlet, Alexandra has chosen to stick with the music she loves, following in the footsteps of her inspirations like Beck and Arcade Fire.
Will Luxury of Failure be the album that garners enough success to have the next generation of artists turning to NLX as a role model? No one knows, but it certainly has potential. Either way, it's fair to say that the singer won't be changing her self-reliant style anytime soon.
Myspace caught up with the singer to discuss how she's like Kanye West, her origin story, and exactly how she developed that unique sound right before she headed out to do a run of shows in Canada
Hometown/Homebase: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
You've been doing it for quite some time, but what's new for NLX in 2016?
Hmmm… My music might be new to some people, and that is fantastic! But at this point in my career, I never thought I would have as much in common with Kanye West. We are both musicians. We’ve spent years writing music. We are misunderstood. Our clothes have holes in them, and I’m also 53 million dollars in debt.
Where did the name NLX come from? Is it short for something?
I decided not to go by my name and get roped in as just another singer-songwriter since I was far more interested in the digital aspect of sounds and textures. Instead, I chose 3 letters from my name. Natasha aLeXandra, and voila, NLX.
How did you first get started as NLX?
Over 12 years ago in a basement apartment bedroom, with a rented 808 and a keyboard.
What was it that helped you create the combination of sounds and tones you use in your music?
Many hours in the studio. When you take time, you make mistakes, and mistakes become discoveries that offer loads of potential.
If you had to pick, what's the best part of making music as NLX so far?
It’s a toss up between being in a studio and being on the road touring. It’s all been quite special.
Is there anything you wish you knew when you were first starting that you've learned since?
There are so many extreme highs and lows with anyone pursuing the arts in this fashion, but you need to breath through the tough times and savor the good one.
After all these years as NLX, what are some of your goals for the near future?
To make more music and get heard.
How do you come up with each song? What's your creative process like?
It's all stream of consciousness.
Do you have any specific message to the people who have never heard your music before?
That NLX is worth a serious listen.
