Award-winning musician Darius Holbert is off and running on his own solo project.
If you haven't heard Darius Holbert's name we won't blame you, but we guarantee you've heard his work. He's the man behind the scenes of some of music's (and movies') biggest and best songs (and scores), but he's also had a side project all to himself for a while now.
At this point, Holbert's won awards for movie scores, including Trophy Kids and Oh, The Places You'll Go!. He's composed music for TV shows like American Horror Story, Lost, Grey's Anatomy and American Idol. He's worked with every music bigwig from Britney Spears and Bobby Brown to Wu-Tang Clan and House of Pain. But now, Holbert focuses his time between projects on DARIUSTX, his solo act that just put out its fifth effort, DARIUSTX V. The Angels of Goliad.
For the classically trained multi-instrument musical mastermind, DARIUSTX is as much of a creative release as it is a musical project. While most of his work revolves around finding something that works for another artist or film producer, being on his own allows Holbert to write the music he wants to write and create songs exactly as he sees them.
Holbert's long been considered one of the most talented and diverse musicians in the industry, and it might just be about time the Texas product gets the name recognition he deserves. After all, how much longer can he keep creating successful music for other people before he finally hits it big on his own?
Myspace caught up with the veteran songwriter to talk about his influences, his latest album and the difference between his solo project and everything else he's working on.
Homebase: Los Angeles, New York City, and Texas.
How would you describe your music to people who had never heard it before and who are some of the musicians who inspired your sound?
I'm a Southern singer-songwriter, Americana, blues, country, folk, rock. In chronological order, some of my influences are: Johann Sebastian Bach, Aaron Copland, Huddie Ledbetter (Lead Belly), Erroll Garner, George Jones, Led Zeppelin, and Jeff Buckley.
How and why did you decide to start up with this new band when you obviously have so much else going on?
Well this is really isn’t a band. It’s a solo side project I’ve worked on in between touring with other acts and composing for TV and film. I wanted an outlet to be able to write songs I wanted to write, not just working on others’ material or collaborating with a director or producer (which I also love, but for different reasons).
Your solo work is definitely Southern, but it's an interesting blend of sounds. How would you describe the roots of your sound?
It’s a mishmash of a lot of the styles I grew up listening to in Texas and Louisiana.
What's the coolest or most memorable experience you've had on your own so far?
There have been a ton of amazing shows over the years, all over the globe. It’s all been pretty amazing.
What's something you've learned in your time working on your own as opposed to in one of your other projects?
That when you make music just for yourself, you always like listening to it.
Are there any specific goals that you have in mind for this project, whether it's in the short run or long?
See a million faces and rock them all. No sorry, that’s for my Bon Jovi cover band, JOVITX.
What's the songwriting and creative process like for you with your solo project rather than in a band or working on the soundtrack for a big production?
It really depends. On this latest album, some of these songs took 5 years to hone in on, whereas one song I wrote while I was sleeping right before the last day of tracking. We cut it pretty closely to how it appeared in the dream.
Is there anything you'd want to convey to your fans (and strangers) about your music (or otherwise) before they listen to your new album?
I’d rather just have everybody listen to it and make their own opinion based strictly on the music. Also, I've never used an adverb successfully.
What's next for you as a solo musician?
The vinyl of this new record is coming out next week, we shot a killer new video, and we’ll be doing some spot touring as soon as possible!
