Here are the games released in 2016 we most regret wasting hours of our lives on.
Veteran gamers know what it’s like to be burned. Like Hollywood, the video game industry is beleaguered with a “sequels problem.” A new installment in a storied franchise — like Star Fox or Street Fighter — used to signal excellence, but these days, prominent video game developers seem to be resting on their laurels and the result has been a considerable dip in the quality of their games.
If there’s a word that best describes 2016, it would most likely be “unpredictable;” in addition to all of the long-awaited sequels that were released this year, we finally got our hands on some unique IPs that were poised to shake up the gaming status quo. Regrettably, many of these titles weren’t too great, either.
Below are our picks for the 5 games released in 2016 that disappointed us the most. At least there’s always next year.
Mighty No. 9
Mighty No. 9 is, in some ways, a massive success on its own terms. Keiji Inafune, the man responsible for creating Mega Man — arguably one of the best and most nuanced platforming game series ever conceived — announced that him and his team were working on the game at the 2013 Penny Arcade Expo. Inafune soon afterwards launched an official Kickstarter page for the game, which ended up receiving nearly $4 million in contributions, making it the sixth most-funded project in the platform’s history.
But the game itself leaves a lot to be desired. The team intended to create a “spiritual sequel” to early entries in the Mega Man series, whose development Inafune himself spearheaded (and which has arguably been mistreated since his departure from the series). After countless setbacks, the game was finally released on pretty much every platform under the sun, and while it performed better on some than others, it was still a letdown across the board. Mighty No. 9’s levels are uninteresting, its gameplay is wonky and glitch-laden, and to top it all off, the voice acting is extremely grating. All in all, Mighty No. 9 ended up being a massive disappointment, especially to the countless gamers who pledged money to the project and were left feeling duped.
