Not a single minority was nominated for its four acting categories.
The 88th Academy Awards nominations are, sadly, proof that history can repeat itself.
For the second year in a row, not a single minority was recognized in its four acting categories, which has the Twitter hashtag #OscarsSoWhite trending once again, while others defer instead to #OscarsStillSoWhite. The actors passed over include Will Smith for Concussion, Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation, Michael B. Jordan for Creed and the cast of the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.
Earlier this month, Los Angeles Times reported that several academy members worried that the lack of diversity in nominations would result in a backlash that would damage the Oscars' reputation, particularly as other awards shows recognized winners of color. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant leads the nominations with 12, including one for Leonardo DiCaprio for best actor, followed by George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road with 10 and Ridley Scott's The Martian with seven.
