From Jack Garratt to Phoebe Ryan, here’s the newest wave of future pop stars.
With the explosion of streaming services and music blogs, it has become tougher and tougher to keep up with the next crop of rising talent, as there seem to be too many to follow. Everyone is bubbling under, everybody’s name is buzzing, and just as you’ve started listening to one act, there are two more than seem to have passed you by. Don’t worry about catching everything, but instead, spend your time listening to those artists that are getting the most attention, and those that truly seem ready to break in a major way, and not just who have received a good word here and there.
If you’re looking for some new music and you want a sense of who might be the newest pop stars of 2016, here are 8 well-educated guesses.
Phoebe Ryan
Thanks to an especially inventive mashup/cover of R. Kelly’s “Ignition,” Phoebe Ryan’s star began to rise over a year ago, but that’s just the beginning. In 2015, she released her debut collection, the Mine EP, which may have been short, but it was honestly one of the best of the year. With one of the greatest debuts in years and a major label deal already to her name, expectations are high for Ryan, but so far she hasn’t disappointed, so there’s no reason to believe she will now.
Jack Garratt
Perhaps more than any artist on this list, Jack Garratt is being touted as the next great thing in music. He may not be pop in the traditional sense, but then again, the music he creates is very tough to categorize. Delicate songwriting mixed with Bon Iver-inspired electronics have helped the British musician become a critical favorite. In fact, he has already won the Critic’s Choice Award at the upcoming BRITS (which is kind of like winning Best New Artist at the Grammys), and that’s before he’s even released an album.
FLETCHER
It appears that we have entered a new era of female empowerment, as the majority of songs released by women in the pop world are focused on them taking charge and running the show. FLETCHER’s debut single, “War Paint,” is an ode to being fearless and not being afraid to fight, all while still being an insidious earworm. From the drums to her battle cries, the song is unstoppable, just like FLETCHER.
Daya
Still only 17, Daya is new to the scene, but she already has a big head start. 2015 saw her drop her debut self-titled EP, which contained the viral hit “Hide Away”. The song just barely missed being her first top 40 hit, but that’s not bad for somebody just beginning in the music world. Now that she has the attention of the Internet and plenty of industry insiders, expect to see her paired up with expert songwriters and producers, and expect something ready for the mainstream.
DNCE
The Joe Jonas-led DNCE is one of the best pop bands to come around in some time—emphasis on the word band. The group isn’t just a vehicle to bring Jonas back to the spotlight, and in fact it really feels like a band in the truest sense of the word, with musicianship being pretty important to what they are doing. The foursome released the SWAAY EP last year, which features the insanely catchy lead single, “Cake By The Ocean”.
Lion Babe
Having a famous parent can certainly help you get your foot in the door in the music industry, but thankfully that’s not all there is to Lion Babe. The duo, which features Vanessa Williams’ daughter Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman, is talented enough to make it on their own, and that’s just what they are doing. In the short time that they have been making music together, the pair have released an EP and collaborated on singles with the likes of Childish Gambino and Disclosure, both of which helped raise their profile. A full length is highly anticipated and expected at some point in 2016.
Conrad Sewell
Still unknown here in the States, Sewell is something of a star in his home country of Australia. He first appeared on the scene as the featured vocalist on tropical house producer Kygo’s “Firestone”, which became the world’s favorite dance tune for a time. After that, he charted several top 40 hits down under, including the smashes “Hold Me Up” and “Start Again”, both of which could make for great first introductions to an American audience.
LÉON
Sweden always manages to produce at least one great pop artist per year, and LÉON was what the world got in 2015. The singer released her Treasure EP and immediately became a favorite of pop blogs everywhere, and one listen will tell you why. She isn’t going for the dancefloor, and she isn’t belting ballads, but she is crafting some of the best-made pop songs out there today, and there’s no telling what could be next for her. If you only have time for one track, make it "Tired Of Talking."
