She became the first black woman to win for best actress in a drama series.
Last night, Viola Davis became the first black woman to win an Emmy for best actress in a drama series. That fact is worth repeating: For the first time in the awards show's 67-year history, a black woman won that best actress category. So, while accepting this honor for her starring role in ABC's How to Get Away with Murder, Viola evoked Harriet Tubman.
In my mind I see a line. And over that line, I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But I can't seem to get there no-how. I can't seem to get over that line.
Then Viola thanks the actresses who helped her get over that line: Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington, Halle Berry, Nicole Beharie, Meagan Goode, Gabrielle Union. As many would say on Twitter, Viola didn't have to include these names in her history-making moment. But she did—a powerful display of solidarity.
