The 'Despicable Me' prequel is now the second highest grossing animated flick.
Minions is now the second highest grossing animated film of all time. Thanks to a landmark opening week in China ($20.1 million in box office sales, the highest for an animated film in the country's history), Minions has grossed $1.08 billion total worldwide, besting Toy Story 3's record of $1.06 billion, according to AceShowbiz. That sales record is about to get higher, too—Minions will open in Greece on September 24.
Frozen is still the highest grossing animated flick ever with $1.28 billion. Whether Minions beats that record or not, production house Illumination Entertainment still has plenty of reasons to be proud: Minions already scored the best opening day ($46.7 million) and second best opening weekend for an animated film ($121 million), behind only Shrek the Third.
