The fashion forward performer describes them as "middle of the road" artists.
When fashion forward performer Grace Jones describes Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus as her "pupils," she does so with a wink. In an excerpt from her autobiography, I'll Never Write My Memoirs, Grace calls them out for imitating her formative work from the '70s and '80s, instead of doing anything original.
"There's a lot around at the moment: 'Be like Sasha Fierce. Be like Miley Cyrus. Be like Rihanna. Be like Lady Gaga. Be like Rita Ora and Sia. Be like Madonna,'" Grace writes of these "middle of the road" artists. "I cannot be like them—except to the extent that they are already like me."
The most interesting part of the excerpt, though, involves someone who Grace calls Doris. Apparently, "Doris" once reached out in hopes of a collaboration, only to start dancing like Madonna after Grace said no.
"I thought she was trying on other people's outfits: she's a baby in a closet full of other people's clothes, a little girl playing dress-up, putting on shoes that don't fit," Grace writes.
I'll Never Write My Memoirs is due out September 24. Read the excerpt at Time Out London.
