“Everybody feels like, you know he got bit by a spider and you know Uncle Ben died."
John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the writers slated to pen the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, revealed the movie will not include the superhero's origin story in a recent interview with The Andy Greenwald Podcast. “Everybody feels like, you know he got bit by a spider and you know Uncle Ben died," Goldstein told Greenwald.
The writers recently worked together on this summer's comedy Vacation, starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate. Watch the duo discuss their work on Vacation and plan for the Spider-Man reboot in the interview below.
The reboot includes a partnership with Marvel Studios that will allow Spiderman to interact with other characters within the Marvel universe, Variety reported in February. Sony bought the feature rights of Spiderman from Marvel for $7 million in 1999. Now, Marvel's Kevin Feige will produce the film with ex-Sony executive Amy Pascal.
This collaboration means Spiderman may appear in the upcoming Marvel Civil War comic book storyline, including Captain America: Civil War, which is due out this year. And according to a possibly leaked cast list, Robert Downey Jr. may be making an appearance as Iron Man in 2017's reboot.
The cast list also reveals the villains Spiderman will be battling, including longtime nemesis The Vulture and supervillain Scorpion, slated to be portrayed by Billy Zane and Jason Biggs, respectively. Spiderman has been confirmed to be played by Tom Holland, a British actor known for starring in London's Billy Elliot the Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre.
The film is still in the early stages of production, and is slated to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
