Drawing from influences like Shirley Bassey and Lauryn Hill, Australian singer-songwriter Grace Sewell delivers an updated take on the blues.

Australian singer-songwriter Grace dropped a soulful debut EP Memo on Tuesday. The 18-year-old singer co-wrote all five of the album’s tracks, drawing from influences like  Gladys Knight and Amy Winehouse to create modern pop hits with a bit of a jazzy twist.

The EP includes Grace’s first single, a cover of Lesley Gore’s 1963 hit “You Don’t Own Me” featuring rapper G-Eazy. The track was produced by Quincy Jones, the song’s original producer, with the help of Parker Ighile, who worked on most of the songs on the EP. The song is currently #1 in Australia, making Grace the first Australian to reach the top of the charts in 2015.

Other notable songs on the EP include the title track, “Memo (Boyfriend Jeans),” a stripped-down breakup ballad Grace wrote and recorded on her iPhone at age 16, and “The Honey,” which combines blues and hip-hop beats to create a catchy and upbeat track.

Grace's new EP, Memo, is out now Regime Music Societe/RCA Records. Listen to it on Spotify or purchase it on iTunes.
