Yes, this is an entirely separate movie from the already announced all-female remake.
Okay, this is a little confusing at first, but bear with us:
Sony Pictures is attempting to construct a cinematic universe around the Ghostbusters—and they want Channing Tatum to star in a film.
Dan Akroyd, along with director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, Meatballs, Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Junior), will be heading up a new production company called Ghostcorps. The first to-do on Ghostcorps' list? Make a new-new Ghostbusters film that is entirely separate from the already announced, all-female Ghostbusters film starring Kristen Wiig.
Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo (Arrested Development) are set to direct and produce this new, male-centric (...so pretty much just a return to the status quo here) film. Drew Pearce (writer for Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible 5) will pen the script. Meanwhile, they've also tapped Tatum as a producer—and the hope here is that Tatum will also star in the film as a Ghostbuster himself.
If this all goes swimmingly, we're going to start see a whole lot more of the Ghostbusters franchise: new films, television shows, merchandising opportunities galore. The Tatum remake would not be released until after the 2016 redux starring Wiig and Melissa McCarthy that is being directed by Paul Feig.
