The East LA Native is representing the region in the world’s largest DJ competition.

In typical Los Angeles fashion, DJ Dynamix realized he wanted to be a DJ for the rest of his life in high school, when he filmed a commercial playing a DJ in the Universal Studios Backlot. Since then, deejaying has been Dynamix’s life.

These days, he drops his knowledge as a teacher at the electronic music school Dubspot in Hollywood, and as a three-time regional champion of the world’s largest DJ competition,Red Bull Thre3style, he will represent Los Angeles as one of 12 DJs in the national event in Phoenix from April 2 to 4. If he reigns supreme, he’ll travel to Tokyo to compete against DJs from nine other countries in the world finals.

What’s on deck for Dynamix if he wins? “I'm gonna go on a nice long traveling spree and focus on making a lot of music.”

Hometown: Born and raised in Echo Park, Los Angeles

Current residence: Montebello. It’s a real cool neighborhood right outside Los Angeles.

Did you grow up in a musical household?

I did. My mother forced me, as well as my sisters, to play piano at an early age. My dad also played guitar and there was a lot of singing and playing as I was growing up.

Who are your biggest musical influences and inspiration?

I'd say the legends: The Beat Junkies, Invisibl Skratch Piklz, X-ecutioners, Z-Trip, DJ Revolution, The Baka Boyz, Tony G, Julio G, DJ AM, as well as the homies DJ Abel, Dstrukt, DJ Sleeper, Mark Luv, DJ Spryte, and my crew the Immortal Fader Fyters all shaped my musical tastes as well as inspired me to be better.

When did you realize you wanted to do music for a living?

When I was in high school, I was part of a theater workshop class that did acting, singing, dancing ... so many different performances. One of the things we did was have me on my turntables battling a drummer in a drum-off. It was one of the most fun and creative things I've done with deejaying and we got to perform in front of sold-out audiences. Also, I got to skip the first day of senior year in high school to film a commercial playing a DJ in the Universal Studios Backlot. I got such a rush from performing, I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.

How do you create your sets?

Really, I just try to find interesting ways to piece songs together using all the skills I learned over the years: scratching, juggling, word-play, tone play, common denominators in the songs, and try to keep the energy while transitioning.

What's your favorite place to play in?

The Union Bar in Iowa City. There's always so much crazy energy in that place and people are ready to party as soon as you walk in the building.

What do you do for fun?

There's this thing called Top Golf that I'm absolutely obsessed with. It's like the driving range and skee ball had a baby. So much fun. But we don't have it in California. So every time I'm in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Tampa, or any part of Texas, I make it a point to go.

What's the craziest thing a fan has ever done for you?

I've had a girl throw her skirt over my head while i was deejaying. Like a long skirt. While she was wearing it.

What's your signature move on stage?

Pointing at my turntables to let people know to pay attention.
