After various lineup changes, San Diego screamo band prove their mettle on new set.

Hardcore band Secrets have been San Diego’s next big thing since 2010. Numerous lineup changes and various recordings later, the now-four piece, made up of vocalists Richard Rogers and Wade Walters and guitarist Michael Sherman with drummer Joe English, have released  Everything That Got Us Here (Velocity/Rise Records).

Rogers says they’re called Secrets because “you never forget a secret.” And it’s true: With two distinct sounding vocalists playing off each other, the band’s post-rock screamo is elevated and made more memorable. Rogers talks to Myspace about their latest release and what they're up to in 2016.

Hometown: San Diego, CA

Homebase: Huntington Beach, CA

There's been a bunch of lineup changes in Secrets. How did you meet everyone in the band?

The rest of the band knew each other and were trying to start a band, so they found me through my old band and asked if I wanted to start a new band together. We had dinner at TGI Friday's and decided to fly to Florida to record some demos. The rest is history.

Why is your album called Everything That Got Us Here?

Everything That Got Us Here is a compilation of stories that helped shape me as a person, whether it's something that I experienced personally or the people I love around me. The band has gone through so much since we formed, both good times and bad times, so I touch base on that since it's been such a big part of my life. I cover addiction, love, self harm, loss, and the determination to get passed everything that life puts in front of you.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Ben Gibbard, Chris Carraba, Anthony Raneri and my friend Matt Kirk who I started my first band with.

How do you describe your music to someone who's never heard you before?

Rock and Roll, baby.

Does where you live influence your music?

I lived in San Diego 'til I was about 10 and continued to visit throughout my life 'cause I still had family there, but most of my teenage years I lived in a town called Ridgecrest, which is a tiny desert town built around a military base. The town was very small with nothing to do, so I played music.

What do you do for fun?

Video games, movies, music, and eat. Lots of eating. My bandmates make fun of me because I always ask and talk about food and what everyone is eating.

Tell us an awesome fan story.

A fan named Becky from Ohio always sends me amazing gifts. Like Cowboy Bebop, my favorite anime series and my favorite album Transatlanticism on vinyl. She is a freaking sweetheart.

Name three of your 2016 new year's resolutions.

Go to Japan, drink less, love more.
