The famed director has finally gotten over his performance anxiety.
The sequel to Avatar (finally) has a release date. "Christmas of '17 is the target," director James Cameron says to Montreal Gazette.
Meanwhile, that film will be the first of three to arrive in three consecutive years—meaning, Avatar 3 arrives in theaters in 2018 and Avatar 4, in 2019. "I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies," James says. "Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story."
Avatar cost $200 million to make in part because James used pioneering computer technology in hopes of making a 3D blockbuster. His efforts paid off: Not only is Avatar the highest grossing film of all time with $2.782 billion made worldwide, but it also scored nine Oscar nominations.
"Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn't just some big fluke the first time," James says to Entertainment Weekly. "So we've got to deliver."
