From Charlie Puth to Josef Salvat, here are 8 male pop singers you should have on your radar (if you don't already).
Pop music is in a weird place right now, isn’t it? Many of the big names that we expect to have a major presence on the charts and across radio waves are almost nowhere to be found, especially the men. Where is Justin Timberlake? Bruno Mars? Bieber just popped back on the scene and Jason Derulo is having a pretty good year, but for the most part, the men we know and love are nowhere to be found. Their absence is our loss, but it is also a great chance for new talent to pop up, and boy is there plenty of that to go around.
If you’re looking for some really great pop music and a new guy to crush on, here are eight musicians that could all take turns as your new favorite.
Charlie Puth
By now, everybody should at least know Charlie’s most famous song, if not actually who he is. Puth sings the tender, melancholy hook on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again.” His soft voice is perfect for the ode to fallen actor Paul Walker and Furious 7 soundtrack cut, which quickly rocketed to number one on charts around the world and went on to tie the record for the longest-running number one rap song of all time. The track may have been his breakout hit, but it’s not the only song in his repertoire. Puth’s own single, “Marvin Gaye”, which features Meghan Trainor, has also become a global hit, and he’s only just getting started.
Josef Salvat
Australian singer-songwriter Josef Salvat got his break, as many do these days, from a cover he made of another act’s chart-topper. His version of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” helped him step into the spotlight, and thankfully he had plenty of excellent material to back up his newfound blogosphere-fueled fame. His signature style of pop is not something you’d hear at the club, but rather one that is deeper, darker, and at times a hushed explosion of excellent production. “Open Season” is a perfect example of how his relaxed vocals can work perfectly on a rather large song.
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
Andrew has been a staple of the indie and pop world for over a decade, but only recently has he embraced the electronic side of things, ironically as he found himself “in the Wilderness.” McMahon was formerly the lead of bands Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin, but now he’s ventured out on his own, and his work is as spectacular as ever. He released his debut album (under this new moniker) just last year, and it’s a beautifully-written blend of traditional pop rock instrumentation and synthpop. Songs like “Cecilia and the Satellite” and “Canyon Moon” are two of the best tracks you didn’t realize you missed last year.
James Bay
Already a huge star in Europe and much of the rest of the world, Bay still has some room to grow here in America. Before he’d even dropped his debut album, Chaos and the Calm, Bay had already won a Brit Award, which is essentially the UK’s version of the Grammys. Long haired and extremely down to Earth, Bay is everything you imagine in a typical singer-songwriter, but his talent is oversized. “Hold Back the River” is a must-hear, if it hasn’t already made it to your ears already.
Matthew Koma
Though you may not know his name, there’s little chance you aren’t already familiar with his songwriting prowess. Koma got his start behind the scenes, and that is where he’s found a lot of his success, penning songs like Zedd’s “Clarity” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “This Kiss”. He has released his own singles (“One Night”, “So Fuckin’ Romantic”) and he’s featured on plenty of pop and EDM tracks (Tiësto’s “Wasted”, Zedd’s “Spectrum”), so there’s plenty of material for you to get to know his voice.
RAC
Short for Remix Artist Collective, RAC has transformed from a consortium of talented remixers and producers to just one man, Andre Anjos. Over time, RAC went from just releasing reimaginings of songs by Bloc Party, Chromeo, and Phoenix to creating some of the best pure pop out there. Like many DJs, Andre employs talented singers and songwriters to take up featured roles on his music, all of whom are just as on the verge of breaking into the mainstream as RAC is. His Matthew Koma collaboration “Cheap Sunglasses” is a perfect summer jam, so keep that in mind for next year.
Frankmusik
After finding Top 40 success in the UK back in the late aughts with singles “Better Off As Two” and “Confusion Girl,” Frankmusik (known to his family as Vincent Turner) left the mainstream, but since then he’s released some of his best work. He is exceptionally prolific, releasing at least one album a year, and in between LPs he’ll drop other music from time to time. His music spans the gamut from radio-ready party fodder (“Do It In The AM” with Far East Movement) to the deeper, more meaningful pop cuts (“Ephemeral Summer” and “Fast As I Can”).
Conrad Sewell
Here’s another name that other big markets are already very familiar with, but who hasn’t quite broken in America. In his native Australia, Sewell has notched two hits of his own—“Hold Me Up” and “Start Again”—as well as a massive joint effort with house producer du jour Kygo (“Firestone”), all of which are big enough to launch him to international fame. It’s likely only a matter of time before he hits that right note and he’s all over your radio.
