This mid-90s, Surrey, England-based heavy metal quartet took their name from what they considered to be a gap in Charles Darwin’s rationale - the theory of evolution not accounting for a 30-million-year gap in fossil records, nor explaining why humans use only 10% of their brain capacity.
The answer, for this, was that ‘An advanced life form came to earth from space and mated with what we consider a lower life-form, an ape. The offspring became what we now call humanity’. The pig element, meanwhile, arrived because ‘we’re now growing organs in pigs for the purpose of being transplanted into humans. But we eat pigs...’. Such elementary logic was reflected in the musical dynamic of the band, fronted by lead singer and thinker Paul Miro, who was backed by friends Sam, Kettle and Bart. Within a year of their formation in 1993 they were putting the finishing touches to a debut EP, Antiseptic, produced by Simon Efemey of Wildhearts, Helmet and Pantera fame. The same producer was recalled for their excellent 1995 debut album, produced at Jacobs Studios in Surrey. This highly varied selection included highlights such as ‘Open Season’ and ‘Great Place’, establishing the group at the forefront of a revival in UK metal alongside groups such as Reef and Bush.
