Martín Alvarado is widely considered to be Argentina’s finest and most significant contemporary tango vocalist and the most exciting voice to have emerged from Buenos Aires for decades.
Born and raised in the Buenos Aires barrio of Flores, he discovered his singing ability by chance at the age of nineteen, while studying the guitar in Buenos Aires.
Later he travelled to Spain, where he was spotted singing in Barcelona and invited to perform in Finland, a country with hugely popular tango scene. News of his talent spread quickly and within two months of arriving there, he was performing with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra.
Having toured internationally over the past ten years, Alvarado has won wide acclaim across the world for his 'extraordinarily beautiful' tenor voice, and already his acknowledged artistry is such that he is increasingly being recognised as a highly influential vocalist in the history of tango. In Argentina, where his music enjoys daily airplay on tango radio stations, he has been a prolific composer and versatile collaborator, drawing comparisons with the late, great Carlos Gardel as a modern cantor nacional (national singer).
Blessed with a stunning vocal and emotional range married to a commanding and charismatic stage presence, Alvarado has successfully undertaken interpretations of many styles, including milongas, valses, candombes and zambas, also finding time to dig out rare works by celebrated poets and composers such as Astor Piazzolla. He has written over seventy pop and rock songs, as well as recording Spanish versions of well-known Finnish and Russian tangos.
Recently Alvarado has gained acclaim for his collaborations with some of the more avant-garde Finnish tango players, such as pianists Matti Laukkanen (of nuevo tango oufit Quinteto Otra Vez) and Mikko Helenius, in the process exchanging interpretations of well-known compositions and exploring new possibilities in a timeless genre.
This year (2013) he picked up a Latin UK Award for Concert by International Artist of the Year in the United Kingdom. Later this year will see the release and worldwide distribution of his latest of four albums “Más Allá” produced with guitarist Horacio Avilano, through the leading UK-based World Music Network label where he joins a roster of some of the biggest names in world music of all genres and becomes the only acoustic tango artist to have an entire album released through this highly re label.
His other albums are “Martin Alvarado” (2003), “Asi es mi tango” (2006, with bandeonista Leopoldo Federico as special guest star), and “Tango Norte, Tango Sur” (2008, made in Finland with Quinteto Otra Vez)
Among Alvarado's most notable achievements are taking part several times in Astor Piazzolla’s tango operita “María de Buenos Aires” in its first production in Poland in 2009 and several times in Finland including the prestigious Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival.
In 2008 he starred in a cutting-edge tango project "El concierto del Nuevo Tango", with renowned conductor and flautist Patrick Gallois, conductor Dmitry Slobodeniouk, Otra Vez quintet and symphony orchestras and, in another version, with the renowned Finnish jazz orchestra, UMO.
At the moment he is working on three new albums, one with Horacio Avilano in Buenos Aires, one with Mikko Helenius in Helsinki and another with Matti Laukkanen in Finland.
