Purveyors of scruffy power pop from North Carolina, Accelerators formed around vocalist Gerald Duncan and drummer Doug Whelchel, adding guitarist Brad Rice and bassist Mike Johns well after the fact.
The group's 1983 debut, Leave My Heart, was produced by Don Dixon (who worked with R.E.M. and Let's Active) and featured guitar by Mitch Easter; while less energetic than R.E.M.'s contemporary material, Accelerators' mature brand of rock & roll showed them in fine form. Moving to Profile for a follow-up four years after the fact, the band released a self-titled album, again with Dixon on-board, but for only two cuts. Another four-year absence preceded 1991's Dream Train, and it was the band's last. ~ John Bush
