In an era of hip hop where lyricism has taken a backseat to simplistic staccato flows and passing trends, an emcee like 5th Child comes as a breath of fresh air.
Hailing from Jackson, MS, 5th (born Stephen Brown) takes a much more introspective approach to his craft. Rather than replaying the dopeboy tales, club life, and war stories that have become so prevalent in the culture, 5th's subject matter explores the various dimensions of life, love, politics, religion, & music. At 27 years old, 5th's music combines the content of a socially conscious rapper with hard hitting yet soulful beats to produce a sound that is inspiring and catchy at the same time. Through the years, 5th Child has earned the reputation as one of the most dynamic live performers in the southern indie hip hop scene. Using the same high energy stage presence that he developed while performing with live bands in college, 5th has performed at many music festivals including but not limited to: Jubilee Jam, Farish Street Festival, JazzFest, A3C Hip Hop Festival, New Orleans Voodoo Festival, The I Love Hip Hop Tour, Recognize the Real Tour with featuring Source Magazine Unsigned Hype artist Tef Poe, MF x OG Tour featuring Kamikaze of Crooked Lettaz and Big K.R.I.T.’s artist Big Sant.
5th is part of a new breed of artists including J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Kanye West, and handful of others in the sense that he produces and mixes his own music. 5th has also produced tracks for RCA recording artist Dee-1, southern legend Kamikaze (formerly of the hip hop duo Crooked Lettaz with David Banner), and many other hip hop/r&b acts.
5th Child was voted Best Local Hip Hop Artist for 2013 in the Jackson Free Press’ Best of Jackson Awards. In 2011 Dee-1’s “Blue” (prod. by 5th Child) was voted Song of the Year at the NOLA Hip Hop Awards.
5th Child is also involved in an ongoing community service project at Poindexter Park After-School Club where he teaches 3rd and 4th graders self expression through songwriting. 5th helps the students write, record, and shoot videos for their original compositions and publishes the videos on YouTube.
