Signed to Novamute, 3Phase is essentially Sven Roehrig (b.
Berlin, Germany) plus his various associates and technological aides. He in turn is part of the Berlin-based Tresor club and label, which has achieved lots of good press (not least via the patronage of the Orb’s Alex Paterson). His debut album (Schlangenfarm translates as ‘Snake Farm’) revealed Roehrig’s debt to his industrial music past - he had formerly been a member of Justice League, Tox Movement and Boom Factory, and his earliest major influence was Throbbing Gristle. The 3Phase banner had first been invoked as his interests in techno grew, and also reflected the post-Wall Berlin spirit which gave birth to a regenerated club scene. In 1992 he collaborated with DJ Dr. Mottke for ‘Der Klang Der Familie’, which became the theme song to Berlin’s third annual Techno festival - the Love Parade. It also provided the title of Tresor’s first compilation album, and became a massive European-wide hit in its own right.
